How to install Go on Ubuntu 20.04

Download Go for Linux, at the time of writing it was go1.19.3.linux-amd64.tar.gz (142 MB) package:

$ ls go1.19.3.linux-amd64.tar.gz
go1.19.3.linux-amd64.tar.gz

Remove previous Go installation:

$ sudo rm -rf /usr/local/go

Unpack the archive:

$ sudo tar -C /usr/local -xzf go1.19.3.linux-amd64.tar.gz

Add Go binaries path to PATH environment variable:

$ vi $HOME/.profile
$ cat $HOME/.profile
# ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells.
# This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login
# exists.
# see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples.
# the files are located in the bash-doc package.

# the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask
# for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package.
#umask 022

# if running bash
if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then
    # include .bashrc if it exists
    if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then
    . "$HOME/.bashrc"
    fi
fi

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
if [ -d "$HOME/bin" ] ; then
    PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
fi

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
if [ -d "$HOME/.local/bin" ] ; then
    PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
fi

# B.Komazec added as part of Go installation (for a single user only)
# set PATH so it includes Go bin if it exists
if [ -d "/usr/local/go/bin" ] ; then
    PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/go/bin"
fi

Reload the current user's profile config:

$ source $HOME/.profile

Verify installation:

$ go version
go version go1.19.3 linux/amd64
